Look for a betta that is:
-Alert
-Has bright clear eyes
-Is happily swimming about
-Does not have clamped fins
-Does not have a protruding stomach
- Has healthy fins with no tears or holes.
If you can, ask to see the betta being fed to make sure that he is ok and feeding well!
Try to avoid shops that are selling them in tiny pots, jars or vases as this is just encouraging the cruel treatment of them. Choose a shop that has clean, heated and filtered tanks.

To answer questions regarding sick betta's, its important you state what size tank they are in, whether its filtered and wether its heated (its should be heated! They are tropical fish). It is also useful to tell us information regarding water tests, especially ammonia, nitrite and nitrate readings.

Common diseaes and treatment

Betta fish are quite prone to problems due to excessive inbreeding to get longer fins and colours. Unfortunately, most of the problems that occur are down to us, maintaining water quality is key to having a happy, healthy betta.
It is also very useful to have another tank up and running to use as a treatment/quarantine tank. This is because medicines can seriously affect your filter (you may even have to re-mature your tank) and damage plants.
ICH or WHITE SPOT Disease:
-Looks like white grains of sugar on the body and fins of the fish. It is caused by a micro-organism (a ciliated protozoan parasite called Ichthyophthir

(This is assuming that you have all the equipment)
1. Siting: After buying you tank and/or stand, you need to find a good place to sight it. Once filled, it will be very heavy and depending on its size, impossible to move! Site it somewhere that avoids sudden or extreme temperature changes and is away from sunlight. Also consider how close power points are as well as if your floor can take the weight. Keep it away from drafts and doorways (as the vibrations caused by a door moving can stress fish).
If it’s going into your bedroom, can you cope with the noise produced by filtration?

Do you know any places that they sell Betta's in larger tanks? Or just not tiny living spaces?
I was wondering, because I plan on getting a betta (has been doing tons of research) and the only place that I can think of thats so-so is PetSmart.
